Introduction: Two Pastry Cafés in Yorkville, Toronto
Yorkville is one of Toronto’s most charming neighborhoods, especially when it comes to cafés.
During our stay in downtown Toronto, we visited two popular pastry cafés in Yorkville: Virtu Café and De Mello Coffee.

Both are well known for their pastries, but the experience at each couldn’t be more different.
One is calm and cozy, perfect for slow mornings. The other is bright, energetic, and great for takeout.

Here’s how our visits went—rainy weather, kids in tow, and plenty of pastries involved.
Virtu Café: A Cozy Spot for a Slow Morning
I usually book hotels with breakfast included, but this time I skipped it. With so many cafés around downtown Toronto, it felt like the perfect excuse to explore.
On a rainy weekday morning, we headed down to Virtu Café, which is directly connected to our hotel. With the kids along, the easy access alone made it an ideal choice.

Outside the window, people rushed to work under umbrellas. Inside, the café felt calm and unhurried. Soft lighting, warm tones, and a relaxed atmosphere made it easy to settle in—even on a grey morning.

We grabbed a window seat and ordered drip coffee for my husband and me, hot chocolate for the kids, plus a butter croissant, pistachio croissant, raspberry muffin, and a pain au chocolat.

We planned to keep it simple. We didn’t.
The coffee was smooth with a gentle acidity.
The butter croissant was crisp on the outside with light, flaky layers inside—clearly why Virtu Café is known for its pastries. The pistachio croissant was subtly nutty, the raspberry muffin generously packed with berries, and the pain au chocolat rich and deeply chocolatey. Honestly, it was exactly what you want on a rainy morning.

I was surprised when my older daughter finished my pain au chocolat and then reached for the pistachio croissant too. Some preferences clearly run in the family.
The kids stayed by the window, watching people pass by, while my husband and I slowly sipped our coffee and planned the day. No rushing, no strict schedule—just enjoying the moment. That’s when the trip really started to feel like a vacation.

De Mello Coffee: Bright, Energetic, and Great for Takeout
The next morning, we stopped by De Mello Coffee, this time just for takeout.
The weather was still cloudy, but the vibe couldn’t have been more different. From the entrance, the café felt bright, lively, and full of energy. The smell of coffee drifted through the glass windows, and the logo—featuring a traditional Korean mask—immediately stood out.

De Mello Coffee is Korean-owned, which I learned during our visit. Seeing Korean writing on the coffee bean bags felt unexpectedly familiar, and I was surprised to find out the brand also has locations in Korea.

We promised ourselves to order less this time.
Still, we ended up with a butter croissant, pistachio croissant, and pain au chocolat—again. At this point, it felt more like research than over-ordering.

The pastries were excellent once more. Crisp, aromatic, and satisfying. Compared to Virtu Café, the chocolate here tasted a bit sweeter, while the pistachio flavor felt bolder and more pronounced.
One thing that stood out was the kids’ menu.
Drinks like Babyccino and Milky Rainbow (the names alone are adorable) made the café feel very family-friendly.
I also tried their popular matcha latte. I ordered it at 50% sweetness, and it turned out a bit mild for my taste—next time, I’ll definitely go for 100%. The tiger illustration in the logo, inspired by Korean folk art, was another fun detail.

Virtu Café vs De Mello Coffee: Which One Should You Visit?
If you’re looking for a quiet place to sit down, relax, and slow your pace, Virtu Café is a great choice.

For something brighter and more energetic—or if you’re grabbing coffee to go—De Mello Coffee is a better fit.

Both cafés are worth visiting, especially if pastries are high on your Toronto café list.
Each offers a slightly different flavor profile and atmosphere, making them easy to enjoy for different reasons.

Final Thoughts
Virtu Café feels calm, cozy, and reflective.
De Mello Coffee feels lively, urban, and energetic.

They’re completely different, yet both left a strong impression. Sharing pastries on a rainy day, slowing down, and enjoying those small moments with my kids—those are the memories I’ll likely remember long after the trip is over.
